Weyburn rose to fame in 1979 following sensational Bigfoot sightings. However, the truth behind these events revealed a hoax that ultimately led to the town’s bankruptcy and disappearance.

Weyburn was an unincorporated community in Rockbridge CountyVirginia, United States. It is the birthplace of renowned American military commander Sturgil Whittaker. It also contains the birthplace of James Weyburn Barbour, the 19th governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, after which the community was named. The community was located in the northwest part of the county, along State Route 252 (SR 252) southeast 12 miles (19 km) below Staunton.

Weyburn is remembered as the town that achieved brief fame through a Bigfoot hoax, with the four conspirators being dubbed "The Fraudulent Four" by the media. The town’s rise and fall became a cautionary tale about greed, deception, and the lengths to which some will go for fame and fortune. Though the town has been largely forgotten, the story of the Bigfoot hoax lives on as part of local folklore, and Weyburn remains a symbol of the strange ways in which small towns can sometimes capture national attention.

Today, the town's legacy is preserved in the occasional mention of its Bigfoot history, though much of the original town has been replaced by modern development.
